History of Medicine interview with Matt Scudder

An interview with Matt Scudder, Academic Training Officer and two students from Brazil who did the History of Medicine course online.
Thank you to Carolina and Antonio Martins for their time.
Matt: Why did you sign up to the History of Medicine Course?
Carolina: My husband and I have forever dreamed of taking the WSA History of Medicine Course, but it required us to take a leave of absence from work in our country… The shift from fully in person to a hybrid format – that happened with the COVID 19 pandemic – allowed us to finally be able to do it!
Matt: How would you describe your experience of the course being based overseas?
Carolina: We had such a great time! Saturdays became such a joyful day, just because we knew we would be having classes on the most amazing subjects in History of Medicine! Besides, making plans for trips to visit important sites for the History of Medicine helped us live through the pandemic and based the traveling we have been doing and enjoying since!
Matt: What have you found most valuable?
Carolina: Each lecture became a study topic that we wanted to learn more about and kept discussing through the week. We had not realized it at the time, but we were gradually preparing ourselves for the Diploma!
Matt: Would you recommend the course to a friend or a colleague? And If so, why?
Carolina: I do recommend the Course to all my friends and colleagues. The Program is doable in anyone’s schedule and instead of a burden (…many online courses end up that way…) it turned out to be a great source of joy!
Matt: What have you gone on to do since the DHMSA/completing the course?
Carolina: We did take the Diploma in History of Medicine! We also published a longer version of our Thesis as books, started courses in History of Medicine in Recife – Brazil, and have had a few papers on the History of Surgery and Neurosurgery accepted. We are very thankful to the WSA and its team for being so welcome and pushing us into having such fun at this point in our careers!
There is still time to join the course in-person, online or both. Registration is open until 30 November, click here to find out more.
