How To Become A Member

Membership of the Apothecaries is open to medical professionals who are registered with the GMC or overseas equivalent, and to registered pharmacists. We offer a wide range of activities and events designed to appeal to a variety of tastes and we encourage our members to be actively involved. Apothecaries also enjoy membership of the Centre for Health Studies and receive discounts for lectures.

If you would like to join the Society, please contact the Clerk’s Assistant who will be happy to guide you through the process (email clerksec@apothecaries.org).

The Membership Journey

There are several stages on the way to becoming a Liveryman:

Apprentice

If you are not yet qualified, you may join as an Apprentice. Apprentices are students of medicine or pharmacy who are ‘bound’ to a member of the Society (their Apprentice Master) in an historic arrangement. They meet regularly and have an active connection to the Society through their Apprentice Master, and all Apprentices automatically become members of the Young Apothecaries. Once you have completed your studies and qualified, you can then apply to become a Yeoman and this begins your journey towards full membership of the Livery.

Yeoman (Freeman)

Qualified medics and pharmacists can apply to be a Yeoman and there are two routes to joiningeach of which requires payment of a Fine (joining fee) and Quarterage (annual membership fee):

* Freedom by Servitude
For those who have completed an Apprenticeship with the Society as above, who are medically qualified or registered as pharmacists, and who are over the age of 21.

* Freedom by Redemption
Your application will need to be supported by two existing members of the Society, one of whom must be a Liveryman and the other may be either a Yeoman or a Liveryman. If you don’t know any of our members there’s no need to worry – we suggest that in the first instance you book in to one of our public lectures and make yourself known to the staff team who can then introduce you to some of our members.

Liveryman

You may be considered for promotion to the Livery after two years as a Yeoman, having gained the Freedom of the City of London and having paid the Livery Fine. All members are expected to show their commitment to the Society by actively participating in its core activities – Education, Charity, Fellowship and the City. Once these conditions have been met, Yeomen may apply for promotion.

Court of Assistants

The Court of Assistants comprises 24 members of whom at least 21 must be registered medical practitioners. Vacancies are filled by Liverymen who are selected on merit.

The Centre for Health Studies

All of the Society’s academic activities, including our two Faculties and diploma examinations, are managed by the Centre for Heath Studies at Apothecaries’ Hall. Membership of the Centre and its Faculties is open to members of the public who are not Apothecaries. There is an annual membership subscription and members receive discounts for lectures. Former students of the Faculties may also become Fellows. (Please note that members of the Faculties do not automatically become members of the Society of Apothecaries. Please contact AcademicEvents@apothecaries.org for more information on how to join the Faculties.
