This year’s Galen Awards ceremony was hosted by the Master Apothecary, Professor Michael Farthing and took place as a seminar on Zoom, on Wednesday 15 July 2020. The Society is unique in combining the responsibilities of a City of London Livery Company with a UK medical academic institution.  The Galen and Farr Awards mark our annual celebration of medical science and education.

The GALEN MEDAL

The 2020 Galen Medal is presented to Professor Dame Kay Davies in recognition of work in the field of the molecular analysis of human genetic disease,particularly Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD), and the application of genomics for the analysis of neurological disorders and gene–environment interactions.

THE WILLIAM FARR MEDAL

The 2020 Farr Medal is presented to Professor Craig William Ritchie in recognition of the substantial impact made at a global level on the wellbeing of older people through leadership of dementia prevention research and service innovation, merging expertise in translational epidemiology with psychopharmacologyand clinical trials design and delivery, noting determination to see research from own projects and elsewhere rapidly embedded in clinical practice and public health policy.

THE APOTHECARIES’ PRIZE

The 2020 Apothecaries’ Prize is awarded to Dr Yin Wu for their paper ‘An innate-like Vδ1+ γδ T cell compartment in the human breast is associated with remission in triple-negative breast cancer’ published in Science Translational Medicine, 9^th October 2019 (https://stm.sciencemag.org/content/11/513/eaax9364/tab-article-info).

PRIZE FOR EXCELLENCE IN MILITARY MEDICAL SUPPORT TO CRISIS

The 2020 Prize for Excellence in Military Medical Support to Crisis is awarded to Surgeon Commander Steven Aaron Bland who has demonstrated consummate professionalism as a subject matter expert in his field of CBRN medicine over the last ten years.  His personal contribution particularly to UK and NATO training and guideline development, for military and civilian medical personnel, demonstrates clinical excellence and supported the recovery and lessons learned process following the 2018 Nerve Agent attack in Salisbury.
