Visit to and luncheon at Eltham Palace (English Heritage)
The number of places is limited to 25 and will be allocated on a first-come first-served basis. Please feel free to invite one or more guests.
From the 14th to the 16th century, it was an important royal palace where monarchs often stayed and hunted in the surrounding parks. After centuries of neglect, Eltham was leased to Stephen and Virginia Courtauld in 1933, who built an up-to-the-minute house there that incorporated the great hall. The result was a masterpiece of 20th century design.
Eltham Palace (Court Yard, Eltham, Greenwich, London) is easily accessed by car (sat nav: SE9 5NP) though may also be reached by rail (Mottingham station: 0.5 mile, 10-minute walk). Detailed information on travel, access, facilities, the history of Eltham Palace and more is provided on the website.
Our visit to Eltham Palace will include light refreshments on arrival, followed by a guided tour of the house – a magnificent art deco mansion, set in a medieval palace setting. The tour will take us around the house, showing off the stunning interiors and furnishing, reflecting the high fashion of 1930s. We will also be visiting the medieval Great Hall, the childhood home of Henry VIII. This will be followed by lunch in a reserved area within the Orchid House café and then free time to explore the gardens at leisure, or return to the house and Great Hall, with the aid of a guide book provided to all visitors.
Programme:
10:30 Arrival with tea, coffee and biscuits
11:30 Start of our tour
13:00 Lunch (served in the Orchid House café)
14.30 End of lunch (visitors are welcome to leave after lunch or enjoy free-time in both the gardens and house until 17:00)
17:00 End of our visit
Refunds, minus a £5 admin fee (per ticket), will be offered, upon request, to anyone cancelling for any reason up to six working days before an event. After this time, no refunds are available.
The Livery Committee is the Society’s members’ social committee and is separate from the main Society Programme. It operates outside of the governance of the Society, and uses a money-pooling system for all of its events. Net receipts collected by the Society on their behalf are passed to the Livery Committee.
