Apothecaries under Siege: Thomas Johnson, William Rosewell and the English Civil War

Event Details

Speaker: Jessie Childs

Jessie Childs is an award-winning author and historian who appears regularly on television, radio and the review pages of many papers, including the TimesSunday Times and London Review of Books.

Her latest book The Siege of Loyalty House was hailed by Simon Schama as ‘almost Tolstoyan in its emotional intelligence and literary power’. It tells the story of the epic resistance of a royalist garrison during the English Civil War and features two key members of the Society of Apothecaries: Thomas Johnson, the editor of Gerard’s Herball, and past Master, William Rosewell. Jessie will focus on their stories in this illustrated talk and will be delighted to answer questions and sign books afterwards.
