Step into a night of historical elegance and theatrical charm at the Apothecaries Hall on Friday, 12th April 2024. The ‘Master’s Charity Opera & Supper,’ a unique event, promises an evening filled with culture, music, and philanthropy.

Nestled within the grandeur of the Apothecaries’ Hall, this event is more than just a gathering; it’s an experience steeped in history and artistic expression, designed to captivate and inspire.

The event unfolds with a champagne reception at 6:45 pm in the Champagne bar, a warm welcome from the Master in the Great Hall before the opera commences, leading into a sumptuous dinner service. The evening culminates with short speeches from esteemed guests, including the Charity Chairman and a recipient of one of our grants.

The evening’s centerpiece is a staging of the seventeenth century opera ‘Lo Spedale,’ a one-act satire of healthcare, love and lifestyle by poet Antonio Abati. By turn beautiful, farcical, and satirising issues in society which are still pertinent today, this is a rare opportunity to see a work which deserves to be more widely performed: this is only the fourth time it has been performed since the mid-seventeenth century.

Lo Spedale’s intriguing past is woven into the evening’s narrative. While the composer remains a mystery, the recent discovery of a manuscript in Rome has opened new avenues in our understanding of the work’s origins. This event not only showcases the opera’s artistic merit but also celebrates its place within a broader historical and cultural context, which includes our own.

The purpose of the evening is to raise money for the Master’s Fund which supports medical and pharmacology students when they find themselves in financial difficulty.  We can’t pay off a student’s debts. But we can give a helping hand. We know that it isn’t just the monetary value of the donation that makes a difference, but it’s the fact that somebody cares.

Any profit made from the evening will go directly to the Master’s Fund.  We are grateful to a generous member, who wishes to remain anonymous, who has sponsored the cost of these talented young musicians, Musica Antica, who we know will entertain you all.
